It is needless to underline the importance of mathematics amongst all learning disciplines. The following that is referred from Vedang Jyotish is enough to understand its significance.
“ यथा शिखा मयूराणाां नागानाांमणयो यथा । तद् वेदाांगिास्त्राणाां गशणतांमूशनिवतिते॥ “
“As crowning crest lies on the hood of Peacock and shining gem on the head of Cobra, likewise the mathematics is the supreme amongst all learning disciplines including organs of Vedas.”
The Department of Mathematics came into existence in 1969 and offers undergraduate programs in Mathematics and research programs in Mathematics. Dr. D.B. Singh (1969- 2000) was the first head of the Department, and Dr. Ram Sagar Singh (1980-2007) guided the college and the Department to achieve academic excellence. Presently, the Department led by Dr. Brijesh Pratap Singh, Assistant Professor, along with coordinated efforts of permanent faculty Mr. Dheeraj Shukla, Assistant Professor.
The Department offers the Ph.D. Programs in various areas of mathematics such as special function, operation research, algebra, and fluid dynamics. The Department has a fully equipped Computer Lab and library. The Department caters to students' knowledge-based education needs, seeks to develop problem-solving skills within the mathematical spectrum, and suggests applications to other branches of science. Many passed-out students of the Department have been contributing to society and the nation in their glorious capacities of different departments of banking and finance and civil services, including coveted teaching and research institutions such as state and central universities.
Vision
The department envisages preparing competent mathematicians, researchers, and professionals in Mathematical Sciences who can impart mathematical education and conduct innovative research at national and international levels. It also aims to promote and propagate mathematical thought and study among the mathematical fraternity.
Mission
The mission of the department is to ensure and provide a friendly and cordial environment for teaching, learning, and research; and to facilitate state-of-the-art infrastructure for developing skills in mathematical sciences, including advanced computing, a pressing need of the day. Also, it is bound to provide a positive environment to imbibe the values of mathematics education and research.
